Unsung heroes of cinema. Part 9. Regina King.

You recognise their faces but you aren't quite sure where from. You see them and go "HER!! I see her in everything" and then you forget them. There's a fleeting recognition that disappears as soon as they die in, usually, violent ways. These are the actors that if, IF, you notice them, don't turn up in the opening credits of a film. In fact you'll have to do some pretty lengthy searching of the closing scrolling credits to find them

Regina King

A near 30 year veteran of tv and film Regina made her debut in one of THE most well known of all 90's film and the film that started the renaissance in black cinema. She's played cops, criminals, the brains behind quarterbacks, been in stoner comedies, been in giant friendly monster films, biopics of R&B superstars and voiced CGI characters. All this on top of a bucket load of TV work including some of the best tv shows of the last few years, Southland, The Leftovers and American Crime. The type of actor who lends a touch of class and authority to a role. Even The Big Bang Theory. 

Greatest hits

Boyz In The Hood. "I ain't no ho" Makes a great impression as Shalika with only a minute or 2 of screentime. A super debut.

Jerry Maguire. Marcie Tidwell, aka the brains and the heart behind Rod Tidwell's quarterback success.

Ray. Super as Margie Hendricks, a member of The Raelettes. The backing vocalists for Ray Charles.

Southland. Lydia Adams, the detective you do not fuck with and one of the few characters to survive to the end of this fantastic and severely underwatched tv show.
