10 films worth watching on TV this week

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel   Sat   2/12   CH4 @ 20.00

A group of British retirees decide to move to a hotel in India where their money will go farther and they can enjoy the weather and the lifestyle. A lovely gentle comedy drama that's perfect when you want a bit of stress free viewing. The cast is something else too, a roster of the best of Britain's older talent including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson amongst others.

Doomsday   Sat   2/12   Syfy @ 21.00

In the near future a deadly virus has destroyed Scotland and turned it into a savage wasteland. When the virus threatens England a woman must venture north to find the cure. Rhona Mitra has a ball as the lead of this insanely violent and extremely entertaining mix of Outbreak & Mad Max 2. Medieval fights, car chases and cannibalism are just some of the treats on display here!! Great craic if you have the stomach for it.

Oblivion   Sat    2/12   RTE2 @ 21.25

In a post apocalyptic Earth a lone worker makes a discovery that puts into question everything he thought he knew about what happened to the planet. Ok the plot of this one is a bit wispy but it does things you don't usually see in big movies. Tom Cruise carries the film in style as always and it just looks astounding. The kind of film HD TV's were made for. Olga Kurylenko & Morgan Freeman are good as always in support.

20 Feet From Stardom   Mon   4/12   Film4 @ 23.15

A cracking documentary about a section of showbiz rarely seen. The female backup singers that perform live just out of the spotlight. So near to and yet so far from superstardom. Joyous in places and heartbreakingly frustrating in others but so worth watching. You probably recognise most of the music and it's lovely to be able to put a face to the voices you've been hearing for years. Merry Clayton is a standout.

Super 8   Mon   4/12   TG4 @ 21.30

After a group of teenage wannabe filmmakers witness a train crash, what happens afterwards will change their lives forever. JJ Abram's homage to the sci-fi films of the 1980's is a very entertaining way to spend a couple of hours. The young cast is brilliant and their likability and believably help the film through the sillier scenes. Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney are the stand outs and Kyle Chandler in support is always dependable.

The Blue Lamp   Tues   5/12   TCM @ 11.10

An elderly London copper who is due to retire takes on a new recruit who is more suited to the criminals of the day. Yes, it sounds like every cop film and tv show you've ever heard of but this came first, being made in 1950. Gritty for its time and accurately showing the slog of police work, this a fine little noirish thriller buoyed by excellent acting from Jack Warner and Dirk Bogarde especially as the criminal of the piece.

Boy   Wed   6/12   Film4 @ 23.20

In 1980's New Zealand a young Michael Jackson obsessed boy comes face to face with his long lost Da and finds out that dreams and reality rarely match. Taika Waititi's 2010 film is an absolute joy. It's a film that will upset you & and make you laugh in equal measure and filled with great performances from both James Rolleston as Boy and Waititi himself as Da. A lovely, humane film that, a few f-words aside is perfect family viewing.

Force Majeure   Thur   7/12   CH4 @ 01.30

A Swedish family in the Alps find themselves in a very confusing situation after an unexpected reaction during an avalanche. A wry and knowing look at masculinity and what can go wrong with it. Darkly funny, upsetting and mortifying at times, its hard to watch but you won't be able to look away. Top notch acting too with 2 superb performances from Johannes Kuhnke & Lisa Loven Kongsli. Proper mature, original stuff.

16 Blocks   Thur   7/12   ITV4 @ 23.35

Bruce Willis plays an old burnt out cop tasked with bringing a witness to police corruption to court. It's only 16 blocks away but when the entire NYPD is out for blood it's almost too far. A cliched set up is kept fresh with fun performances and some fine action sequences. Willis can do this kind of role in his sleep but Yasiin Bey and the ever reliable David Morse do well and keep things zipping along.

Identity   Fri   8/12   RTE1 @ Midnight

A disparate group of people find themselves being picked off one by one at a run down motel in the middle of nowhere. Just what on earth could be going on? A thoroughly entertaining and darkly funny, grisly whodunnit filled with enough twists and turns for a dozen films. Fine cast too including John Cusack, Ray Liotta and Amanda Peet. Perfect friday night entertainment with a few drinks.
