30 Day Film Challenge. Day 23

The Night Of The Hunter. Directed by Charles Laughton. His only movie. A film that got such a bad reception when it was released in 1955 that he never directed again. Madness. Utter madness. How could anyone watch this and think it was bad. It looks amazing, it tastes amazing and it smells amazing. It's terrifying, it's playful, it's funny and it's dreadfully upsetting. There's imagery in here you'll never forget and it gave Robert Mitchum the role of a lifetime as a con artist murderer chasing two little children across the America midlands. It's best described as an American Gothic Noir. I'll just describe it as a masterpiece. I hate that Charles Laughton went to his grave in 1962 thinking this was a failure.
