Turbo Kid Sat 13/4 The Horror Channel @ 23.05
It's 11pm on a Saturday night so it's post apocalyptic thriller time! The Kid is a comic book obsessed scavenger in a desolate wasteland who much step up and fight evil when the time comes. A hilariously gory homage to the sci-fi flicks of the 1980's and one that's bursting with spirit and invention. If you can get past the blood and guts you'll really enjoy yourself. Munro Chambers as the kid does well & Michael Ironside as always is a fantastic baddie.
John Carter Sat 13/4 BBC2 @ Midnight
An American Civil War veteran finds himself on another planet and with powers beyond belief after he cames across a mystical object in a cave. Yeah, it sounds stupid but it's great fun and so much better than reviews make it out to be. An epic sci-fi adventure that despite the time it's on it's pleasing family viewing. Taylor Kitsch in the title role is solid and leads a cast full of famous faces. Based on a Edgar Rice Burroughs story too btw.
A teenage boy in 1980's Dublin who is struggling with growing up and his family finds an escape when he forms a band with his schoolmates. It was a tough time to be different though. An excellent film, entertaining as hell and bursting with heart and energy. If you don't like this you are probably dead. A cracking Irish cast lead by Ferdia Walsh- Peelo & Lucy Boynton is the icing on the cake.
The Big Lebowski Mon 15/4 TG4 @ 21.30
The Dude's carpet has been ruined and this aggression will not stand, man. So he sets out to right some wrongs and gets tangled up in a bizarre web of intrigue. The Coen Brother's 1997 comedy is a masterpiece of mistaken identity, bowling, strongly vaginal art and some very angry people all wrapped around a superb cast that includes Jeff Bridges, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman and a never better John Goodman.
Red Army Wed 17/4 Film4 @ 02.20
All the best sporting documentaries appeal even when you don't know about the sport. The same is true for this doc about the Russian ice hockey team that dominated globally during the cold war. The Red Army team had the weight of a nation on their shoulders and they delivered in spades. A very interesting and absorbing watch that turns into a nice history lesson too.
The Last Detail Thur 18/4 TCM @ 01.20
While on their way to bring a young thief to the brig, 2 naval officers decide to show him one last good time before he starts his sentence. One of Jack Nicholson's most amusing and free wheeling films, this is profane perfection from start to finish. It's also a deceptively deep film and a nice commentary on the state of America at the time. Nicholson rocks it and Randy Quaid in only his 3rd film plays a very sympathetic part.
Popstar : Never Stop, Never Stopping Thur 18/4 Film4 @ 23.05
Connor4real's new album is a commercial and critical disaster. His music career is going downhill fast and he'll do anything to keep it afloat. But he won't return to his first success. Oh no. Andy Samberg's mockumentary is an absolute riot. It's crude, it's surreal, it's filthy, it may even offend you but it's just hilarious, proper laugh out loud stuff. Samberg is an agreeable lead and Maya Rudolph and Jorma Taccone are quality in support.
Gallipoli Fri 19/4 TG4 @ 21.30
Two Australian men find their youth ripped away from them when they enlist during World War 1 and end up fighting on the battlefields of Gallipoli. One of the finest anti war films ever made, a devastating portrayal of loss of innocence and the absolute futility of war. Mel Gibson and Mark Lee nail the emotional journey young men heading out to certain death go through.
Pilgrimage Fri 19/4 Virgin Media 3 @ 22.00
In the 13th century a group of Irish monks have to transport a relic across a wild countryside filled with danger. This 2017 action drama is a gripping watch. It's also one of the more unusual films you'll ever see with it's bloody action scenes woven around a script of Irish and Latin dialogue. It's gruesome violence won't be for everyone but it's really worth watching. Tom Holland, Hugh O'Connor, John Lynch and Jon Bernthal put in fine work.
Robot & Frank Fri(technically Sat) 19/20/4 BBC1 @ 00.35
Frank is getting old and his kids are starting to worry about him. It being the future they get him a robot to help him out but Frank sees far more potential in the robot than just housework. This film is a joy. An absolute joy. Frank Langella is a masterful lead and the chemistry between him and his robotic bud (voiced by Peter Sarsgaard) makes for deadly viewing. Record this one. You'll love it. Film of the week for me.
