Long before Aerosmith became caricatures they used to make great music. Sweet Emotion was one of their classic songs and here director Richard Linklater finds the best possible use for it in the opening scenes of his 1993 classic Dazed And Confused.
You'll rarely see a cooler film intro than this. The opening lines of the song impeccably paired to the image of Kevin Pickford's Pontiac GTO pulling into the school parking lot in slow motion is just ......well it's just amazing. Rock music, excellent cars and a joint being rolled. A lovely encapsulation of the film in 30 seconds. Then the riff kicks in and we get introduced to the rest of the graduating class of Lee High School of 1976. The stoners, the jocks, the cheerleaders, the nerds and the rest and somehow the choice of tune seems to compliment every single one of them.
It's a film where not much happens but it's all about the mood and this opening scene sets it perfectly. Dazed And Confused is on Netflix now if you haven't seen it before. Just you wait until you see the amount of famous faces who got their start in this film.
Give it a go. It rocks.
