10 films on TV this week worth watching

Lady MacBeth   Sat   6/4   BBC2 @ 22.25

Katherine is a young woman leading a loveless life in arranged marriage in rural 19th century Britain. Darkness ensues when she embarks on an affair with a farmhand. A tough film that will linger in your head long after it's over but it's really worth watching. This is the side of English period drama's we never get to see. Florence Pugh is a phenomenal lead in an intelligent stunner of a story.

The Squid And The Whale   Sat   6/4   TG4 @ 22.35

Two boys in 1980's Brooklyn are affected by their parent's messy divorce and find themselves beginning to act out in strange ways. A cutting, cynical but poignant film that's in places very funny and full of amazing acting from a nice cast. Laura Linney and Jeff Daniels bring great weight to proceedings and Jesse Eisenberg in an early role is superb. A raging performance from William Baldwin is a nice surprise too.

The Walk   Sat   6/4   RTE1 @ 23.30

The true story of Phillipe Petit, the man who decided to walk on a tightrope between the twin towers on New York City. It sounds like a slight story that isn't enough to fill a running time but director Robert Zemeckis somehow turns it into a gripping watch filled with fine acting and some stunning visuals. The always enjoyable Joseph Gordon-Levitt does good work as a death defying eejit.

Sorcerer   Sun   7/4   Film4 @ 00.45

The roads and jungles of South America are a dangerous place as a group of men hired to drive a highly unstable and explosive shipment are about to find out. William Friedkin's remake of 1953's Wages Of Fear is a masterpiece that has thankfully been rediscovered lately. A sickeningly tense and gripping thriller that will pin you to your chair. Roy Scheider in the lead role is on fire

The Way Way Back   Mon   8/4   CH4 @ 00.55

A shy young fella on a holiday he doesn't want to be on finds himself a job at a water park and slowly comes out of his shell over the course of a summer. A fantastic little film, that came out of nowhere and became my favourite film of 2013. It's just lovely, a blend of comedy and drama that will make your day. Liam Jones rocks the lead and Sam Rockwell, Toni Collette and Maya Rudolph all offer great support.

Inglourious Basterds   Mon   8/4   TG4 @ 21.30

A ragtag group of killers is put together to rip apart the nazi war machine. Tarantino's war epic is one that is bafflingly overlooked and easily his best work after Jackie Brown & Reservoir Dogs. Uproariously entertaining, horrifying in places, hilarious in others and with an opening scene that's up there with the best ever. Brad Pitt is fun but Christoph Waltz steals the entire film as a baddie you'll love to hate.

Ginger Snaps   Tues   9/4   The Horror Channel @ 22.40

Brigitte and Ginger are two teenage sisters who share a morbid curiosity with death. This curiosity explodes when Ginger is bitten by a strange dog and starts acting...differently. This women led take on the old tale of lycanthropy is a very entertaining watch. Ya, it's packed full of gore and queasy moments but it's also laced with dark humour and metaphorical meaning. Emily Perkins and Katherine Isabelle are perfect as the main characters.

What Richard Did   Thur   11/4   CH4 @ 01.30

My favourite Irish film of this century. It's a story leading up to and the aftermath of a night out in Dublin that goes very very wrong. A story of how privilege will ruin you and still protect you. A wonderfully acted film about a part of Irish society that we rarely see in film. Jack Reynor is excellent in the title role and is surrounded by a cracking cast of fresh faces we'll be seeing more and more of.

Young Adult   Thur   11/4   Film4 @ 02.05

Mavis hasn't been home in a long long time but when her life goes awry she decides to go back to where it all started to see some old acquaintances. Mavis is a bit of a gowl though. A brilliantly acted feel bad comedy drama about life's disappointments. It won't be for everyone but if you can stick with it there's plenty to enjoy. Charlize Theron is pitch perfect as the lead and Patton Oswalt and Patrick Wilson are solid back up.

Hellboy   Fri   12/4   Dave @ 21.00

A demon created accidentally during a Nazi occult experiment is raised by a kindly American scientist and grows up to be a leading force in the fight against the darkness. Guillermo Del Toro's adaption of the cult comic book is a joy. Hilarious, scary, imaginative & highly entertaining. The cast is wicked too. Selma Blair, Doug Jones & John Hurt all add to the goodness but Ron Perlman as the man with the big fist just walks away with the movie.
