Fairuza Balk. Another unsung hero of film & TV

Imagine starting your film career in the scariest childrens film ever made. It's some way to make your mark. Fairuza Balk's movie debut was the freakish and unnerving Return To Oz, a sequel to The Wizard Of Oz. It was never going to be as famous as Wizard but it certainly made it's mark on a generation of children. It's a tough act to follow. But follow it she did. Sadly she never made it as big as she deserved but fans of her biggest roles know she's a force to be reckoned with.

She's been a scary teenage witch and a scarier white power epousing lover. She's seduced Andy Garcia in Denver, Adam Sandler on a football pitch and a certain someone named Valmont in ye olde France. Played a mutant in one of the most infamously troubled productions of the 90's and turned up as a character in The Sopranos in a scene shown only once on TV. She's been part of a trio who stole a young Cameron Crowe's virginity. She's voiced cartoon characters and computer game prostitutes. Been in horrors, thrillers, comedies, westerns and some godawful Werner Herzog directed dramas. Her 34 year old career mightn't be as packed as others but she's an actress who always makes her mark onscreen because she has a brilliant tendency to rob the limelight away from everyone else. Check out her career here.

Greatest Hits

Gas Food Lodging - Shade, one of the leads in Allison Anders' wonderful little indie drama. Magnificent in the part as always.

The Craft - Nancy Downs. A goth who dabbles in witchcraft and falls for the resulting power a bit too hard. Robin Tunney is the lead but Balk is the stand out.

American History X - Stacey, the girlfriend who chooses bigotry and hate over her reformed fella. A genuinely scary role.

Almost Famous - Sapphire. Groupie extraordinaire. Not a big part but she owns every scene she turns up in. A character worthy of her own film.
