This Is Spinal Tap Sat 5/10 TG4 @ 23.00
Spinal Tap are on the comeback trail and Marty DeBergi is along for the ride to film their exploits. The resulting documentary is glorious. The film that made mockumentaries a thing is a priceless watch as David, Nigel and Derek make fools of themselves at every turn courtesy of spot on performances from Harry Shearer, Michael McKean & Christopher Guest. On a scale of 1-10 I have to give this one 11.
Lucy Sat 5/10 CH4 @ 23.05
While muling a mysterious drug shipment inside her stomach, a woman undergoes a drastic transformation when it leaks. Luc Besson directs Scarlet Johansson in this bonkers film that has a final 10 minutes which has to be seen to be believed. You'll either love it or hate it but you definitely haven't seen anything like it before. Johansson is solid as Lucy and Morgan Freeman & Min-Sik Choi are always a pleasure.

Theodore has fallen in love with Samantha. There's a slight issue though. He's a man and she's an operating system. The future is weird isn't it? Siri you say....Spike Jonze's kinda sorta sci-fi is a surprisingly tender and intimate watch and not half as odd as it sounds due to a couple of excellent turns from Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlet Johansson
Dial M For Murder Sun 6/10 RTE2 @ 11.00
When he discovers his wife is being unfaithful a man decides to murder her to inherit her riches. These things never go to plan though. One of Alfred Hitchcock's most ingenious & darkly humourous films is one that also manages to overcome it's staginess with clever writing, first rate dialogue and sublime performances. Ray Milland and Grace Kelly are perfectly cast.
To Catch A Thief Sun 6/10 BBC2 @ 12.30
A retired cat burglar is being framed for crimes he didn't commit and wants to find out who is doing and why. Alfred Hitchcock's 1955 comedy thriller is a lovely Sunday afternoon watch for all the family. Funny, tense, emotional and quite beautiful looking. The fact that Cary Grant and Grace Kelly are the stars and they work brilliantly together is the icing on the cake.
American Psycho Mon 7/10 TG4 @ 21.30
Patrick Bateman has an enviable life. He works on wall street. He has money to burn. He has all the connections. He is also murderously insane. Mary Harron's adaption of Brett Easton Ellis's classic book massively tones down it's sex & violence but keeps it's razor sharp wit and cutting commentary of 1980's America. Christian Bale in the lead role is immense and gets super back up from Chloe Sevigny and Reese Witherspoon.
Four Lions Mon 7/10 Film4 @ 22.50
Omar, Hassan, Waj, Faisal and Barry are a group of English jihadists planning to bomb a marathon. Omar, Hassan, Waj, Faisal and Barry are also a pack of dopes. A strange basis for a comedy but its one that really really works while also managing to humanise & genuinely make you care about murderous religious extremists. Riz Ahmed, Kayvan Novak and Nigel Lindsay all do mighty work.
The Magnificent Seven Wed 9/10 RTE1 @ 21.35
When their town is threatened by a villainous landowner, the townsfolk pool their money to employ hired guns to help them. They get 7 men more than capable of the job. The remake of the cowboy classic isn't as good as the original but it's still better than anyone expected it to be. It's a lot more violent too. Denzel Washington is reliable as always and gets top notch support from Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'onofrio and Peter Sarsgard.
Midnight Run Fri 11/10 Film4 @ 21.00
Jack Walsh is a bounty hunter and Jonathan Mardukis is the mob accountant he's just scooped up. Now all he has to do is get him from NYC to LA while avoiding the feds and the mob. This 1988 comedy thriller is an absolute joy. Profane, hilarious, full of action and the chemistry between Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin is off the charts. The best odd couple film you'll ever see.
The Frighteners Fri 11/10 Syfy @ 21.00
Frank Banister has a unique supernatural skill and isn't above using it to con the innocent. Until true evil appears and Frank has to get serious. Peter Jackson's horror comedy is great craic and is a hell of a lot more enjoyable than his big budget Hollywood work. Michael J.Fox has a wicked time as the lead in this truly imaginative and entertaining slice of New Zealand style fun.
