Game Of Thrones S05 E09 - The Dance of Dragons
Stannis and his men are feeling the cold outside Winterfell. Then all of a sudden things warm up rapidly when dozens of their tents go up in flames, including their supplies.
So this was Ramsay's plan. Him and 20 men snuck in and set the fires. There's no food left, the siege weapons are destroyed and hundreds are dead. A fine plan in fairness, horrific and sneaky no doubt but it worked.
Stannis is fuming. Davos is worried. He wants to retreat but Stannis won't hear of it. He still wants to attack and take Winterfell. Stannis is a stubborn idiot who'll do anything Melisandre tells him to do.
At the wall Jon and the surviving Wildlings have returned to Castle Black. Ser Allister is very reluctant to open the tunnels and let them through but he does his duty with a face like thunder. At least Sam is pleased to see Jon back. Jon is well aware though that allowing Wildlings and a giant to pass through Castle Black has him a very unpopular leader.
Ser Davos is to be sent back to Castle Black from Winterfell to gather supplies and men. In return Stannis offers to restock the wall with soldiers once he has the Iron throne. He has another reason for sending Davos away too. A very dark reason.
Davos marches to his horse amongst an army that's weak, tired, sick and traumatised. He knows they haven't a hope of taking Winterfell. Before he leaves he says goodbye to his only friend in the camp, lovely little Shireen, his buddy and his teacher. She's sad to see him go too.
Back to Dorne. Ugh, this Dorne subplot is genuinely awful. It's cheap looking, shoddy, full of characters no one would ever give a shit about. It's all padding, there to give Jaime something to do this season. Anyway.
He's brought before Doran Martell to answer for his attack on the prison guards. He admits he came to Dorne to rescue his "niece" Myrcella after there was a warning on her life. Doran is baffled as to the threat's origin
Doran realises the threat came from Ellaria Sand. He apologises to Jaime while she shows nothing but contempt for the Lannister name. Doran brokers a deal with Jaime. Myrcella can return home with him if Trystane goes too. He'll take his dead uncle Oberyn's place in the kings council.
Bronn is to be freed too. But only after a beating seeing as he did punch Prince Trystane. The beating is administered by Doran's huge bodyguard. Bronn takes it like a man.
In Braavos Arya is doing her due diligance of her target. She's getting very near to selling him poisoned oysters when she sees a familiar face arriving at the port. It's Ser Meryn Trant accompanying Mace Tyrell on his visit to the Iron Bank. They are there to renegotiate the Lannister's debt to the bank.
Ser Meryn was one of the very first people on her death list. The man who beat her sister. The man who murdered her sword teacher Syrio Forel. Now she has a chance to deal out some righteous retribution.
She follows them from the port to the city. The negotiations are completed rapidly. Mace Tyrell may look and sound like a bit of a lemon but he has the gift of the gab and the Lannister financial situation is ok. For now.
Meryn goes off to do his own thing. Here we find out he's a mega scumbag. Arya finds him in a brothel seeking out child prostitutes. He's a paedophile. Arya's going to tear him apart. He spots her on the way out but doesn't seem to recognise her.
She returns to Jaqen. Her lies work. He doesn't suspect she has a new target. Or maybe he does and doesn't care. A justifiable death is a justifiable death.
In Dorne Prince Doran asks for Ellaria's loyalty. Its a shite choice, ally with him or die. She chooses loyalty. Her daughters, the godawful Sand Snakes are disappointed in her.
She then meets Jaime and apologises to him. It's time for her to admit that neither him or Myrcella are to blame for the death of Prince Oberyn at the hands of the Mountain. Jaime still doesn't trust her though.
Back in the North something awful is about to happen. Stannis goes to visit his daughter Shireen. She's delighted to have a visit from her Da. His body language says different. He's heartbroken and we're about to find out why.
On the word of Melisandre poor Shireen is to be burnt at the stake and sacrificed to the Lord Of Light. Stannis you sick, twisted, motherfucking piece of shit. He's giving up his daughter for victory. And worse, his wife Selyse is ok with it.
What follows is a brutal moment. Shireen screaming when she realises what's up. Her cries as she's tied to the stake. Stannis is watching and his men are appalled with him. Shireen begs mercy from her parents. Its only when the flames are lit does Selyse freak out. This is horrific. It's very nearly the darkest moment of the show so far.
Off to Meereen we go. The huge fighting pit games are about to kick off. Daenerys and Tyrion are in front of a coliseum sized arena dedicated to the art of death. Neither of them look happy to be there but they are the leaders of the city and it's the done thing.
The inaugural games begin and the crowd cheers for an unhappy Daenerys. The fighters promise to entertain her and the violence kicks off as soon as she gives her blessings. The huge arena is as brutal as the lower pits.
The fighting brings back happy memories for Daario. It's where he learned his trade. He's a strange beast and a very unlikely bedmate for Daenerys. They work well together though.
The battles continue. The crowd's bloodlust is up. The next fight is going to be a big one. Loads of fighters. And one of them is Jorah. Daenerys looks afraid for him but she shouldn't be. He destroys the others. And then picks up a spear and throws it right at her.
It hits an assassin behind her. The masked assassin. The Sons of the Harpy are back and they are out to kill her. Dozens of them rise from the crowd. Tyrion, Daario and Daenerys are in big trouble.
The Sons begin murdering all the officials of the city. Dozens are wiped out in seconds. The Unsullied stand guard around the royal box and Daario wades in swinging his sword.
Hizdahr is murdered right beside Daenerys and the Unsullied are taking huge casualties too. Jorah storms the royal box and stands beside Daario to protect his queen. He offers his hand in protection and she takes it. Woohoo. He's earned her forgiveness.
They rush offstage into the middle of the arena. The Sons are all around her. She knows she going to die but at least she has Jorah by her side. Then a load roar fills the sky. It's Drogon, her missing dragon. He flies in and lands my her side.
Flames erupt from his mouth. The Sons are burned to a crisp in their dozens. Its an awe inspiring sight. Fucking amazing stuff. Spears pierce the dragons side but he still burns all around him until Daenerys calls his name. She needs to save him too.
She climbs on his back and they both fly away. This is her first time to do this. Jorah, Tyrion, Daario and Missandrei are left behind looking on in a mix of awe at what's happened and horror that their queen has left them behind.
Another absolute cracker of an episode. GOT at its darkest with the Stannis storyline and it's most jawdropping with the finale in the arena. Wow. If only the shitty Dorne storyline wasn't there to tarnish it.
