Game of Thrones S04 E08 - The Mountain and the Viper

The village of Mole's Town is a grim place and Gilly isn't one bit happy about having to live there. It's basically one big manky brothel for the men of the Night's Watch. So much for their vows of chastity.

Gilly's the only woman there not selling herself and the other ladies of the town think she has notions above her station. An argument between her and one of them is rapidly interrupted by the arrival of Ygritte & Tormund's wildlings. The cannibalistic Thenn tribe is along for the ride too.

Things get bloody fast. They're a no nonsense bunch and kill everyone on sight. Gilly only survives because it's Ygritte who stumbles upon her and her child. She's still got some bit of humanity. That's good to know.

News gets back to the wall. Sam is distraught, assuming the only woman he ever loved has been murdered. He of course blames himself because that's what Sam does best.

The rest of the Night's Watch are shitting it. They know how close Mole's Town is. An attack on Castle Black is imminent and they aren't ready for it at all. Mance Rayder is coming and they are fucked.

In Meereen, the Unsullied are having some downtime. Grey worm catches sight of Missandrei bathing and it's very clear he has feelings for her. He may be missing his bits but he's still a man.

News of this pleases Daenerys. She wants her underlings to be happy. But seeing as Grey Worm is unsullied and therefore castrated a relationship might be a bit awkward. It's become clear Missandrei has feelings for Grey Worm too.

They make their feelings clear during an awkward encounter in the throne room. She tells him she''s sorry what happened to him. He says it ok because if not for that he wouldn't have met her. Awwww, romance ain't dead yet.

At Moat Cailin Ramsay Snow forces Reek to become Theon once again as part of a trick to take the garrison. Reek is psychologically traumatised by all this but he'll play his part. He delivers the Iron Island terms of surrender to the commander of the garrison. The commander is not pleased about surrender.

Not so his men who murder him before surrendering themselves. It's all a moot point because as soon as the gates open Ramsay bursts in and skins them all alive. Thankfully we are spared the visuals but see the awful aftermath. His plan worked and Reek played his part well.

At the Vale Littlefinger (ugh) is ingratiating himself with the local lords. They don't like him and the news of Lysa Arryn's "suicide" has them troubled.

They want to talk to Sansa. They know she witnessed Lysa's death. And they want to talk to her alone. Without coaching from Littlefinger. Hehehe.

Littlefinger is nervous but Sansa eventually corroborates his story. Littlefinger has shnaked his way through dicey waters once again. He's way too lucky this lad. His way with words has brainwashed Sansa.

The lords are satisfied by her story of Lysa's troubled mind. They aren't happy though when Littlefinger berates them for not supporting the Starks in the war with the Lannister's. He manages to pawn weird little Robyn Arryn off on them. They think it's time he became a man and now Littlefinger has leadership of the Vale all to himself. Clever. Very clever.

At Meereen the crucified slave owners are removed from their crosses and buried under the watchful eye of Selmy. He receives a letter. A letter framing Ser Jorah as a spy for Robert Baratheon. It's the truth. Jorah can't deny it.

This is all part of Tywin's plan to weaken Daenerys. It's worked. Her most trusted ally is now someone she cannot trust even though he's long given up spying.

He admits to her he was a spy. He cannot lie. She's heartbroken. He's broken. She cannot forgive him. They must now part. She exiles him back to Westoros instead of killing him. For him it's a fate worse than dying.

At Moat Cailin, Roose Bolton is very pleased with his bastard son's work. He asks about Locke not knowing he's dead and burned beyond the wall. The north is free from Ironborn now because of Ramsay's work. Roose is now the Warden of the north without anyone to stop him.

To pay him for his work he gives Ramsay the Bolton name. Snow becomes Bolton. He's not a bastard anymore. And Winterfell is his new home. Which means Reek is going home too. Back to the scene of his greatest sins.

In the Vale Littlefinger asks Sansa why she helped him. Her answer is better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

Outside the Vale, Arya and the Hound approach. They're stopped and asked to identify themselves. The news of Arya's aunt Lysa's death causes her to burst out laughing. Everytime she gets close to family they seem to die. Little does she know just how close to her sister she is right now.

It's time to leave. Robyn Arryn is to be shipped off to do some growing up and Littlefinger and Sansa are leaving too. Sansa is rocking a brunette look to help her go unnoticed on her travels. The gleam in Littlefinger's eye looking at her would make you puke.

In King's Landing Tyrion's trial by combat is fast approaching. Him and Jaime discuss his chances of winning. Neither are very confident and both are terrified it's the last time they'll see each other.

We get a lovely scene of two brother's just chilling out and enjoying each other's company. They are laughing but underneath the sadness is clear to see. They truly love each other and they are trying to stretch out the little time they have left.

It's time. Cersei and Tywin are loving this. They can't wait to see the shame of their family fail. Tyrion questions Oberyn about his abilities. He's very pessimistic. Oberyn is very optimistic.

His wife Ellaria freaks when she sees the Mountain. In fairness she's right too. He's massive. Oberyn isn't. It does not look like it's going to be a very fair fight.

The Mountain is pure brute force. Oberyn is all about the agility. He speaks during the fight of his sister Ellia, who he believes was raped and murdered by the Mountain. He wants the Mountain to confess before he dies.

It's a brutal gruelling fight but Oberyn gets the upper hand and rams his spear into the Mountain's chest. It looks like it's all over. He starts to showboat, demanding a confession and stops being aware of his surroundings. You should have just finished him off kid.

The Mountain grabs him, confesses his crime, then breaks his jaw, gouges his eyes out and squeezes his head until it explodes in a fountain of gore. It's a horrifying moment. Oberyn is dead. A great character gone. And the Mountain collapses, seemingly dead too.

Tyrion's champion has lost. He's sentenced to die. Feck.

Now that was a great episode. Loads going on, very little padding and a scene of violence that was appallingly disgusting even by Game Of Thrones standards. Good stuff.
