Game Of Thrones S06 E01 - The Red Woman

Jon Snow lies dead in the courtyard of Castle Black, pints of his blood staining the snow all around him. His direwolf Ghost senses something is up and fills the castle with his howling.

That howling wakes Ser Davos who discovers Jon's body and it's not long before the place is full. Jon's friend Edd is horrified by what he sees. Davos and the lads lift Jon's body and carry it inside in the vain hope that something can be done.

It's too late. There's no coming back from this. Edd instantly knows who's to blame. Ser Allister has had it in for Jon for years and Jon's alliance with the Wildlings was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Melisandre appears. Melisandre practices blood magic and worships the lord of light. Could she??? No......or could she? She's the same religion as Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr and they can bring back the dead. She is troubled. She's seen the future and Jon is part of it.

News of his death travels fast around the Castle. At a meeting Pro Jon and anti Jon soldiers bicker and fight. Ser Allister comes right out and admits his part in the murder. Half the room freaks out but Allister cools them down with talk of how Jon and his Wildling alliance was going to ruin the Night's Watch.

Davos, Edd and a handful of others plot about what to do next. Edd wants them to take out Allister, a move that is undoubtedly suicidal. Davos has a better idea. Get in contact with the Wildlings. They all owe their lives to Jon after he rescued them at Hardhome. Edd sneaks away to get to them while the others lock themselves away from the mutineers.

At Winterfell Ramsay is angry over the death of Myranda and the escape of Sansa and Theon. Never one to wallow in mourning though so he feeds her body to her dogs.

Roose is pleased with Ramsay's battle skills but disappointed in him that he lost Sansa. Without her there's no family alliance with the Starks and controlling the North will be that much harder. Fuck sake Ramsay. Always a disappointment.

Without Sansa Ramsay won't have a heir. But Roose has other ideas about that. His wife is pregnant with a child who could usurp Ramsay. This encourages Ramsay to make sure he gets Sansa back.

Sansa and Theon meanwhile are on the run and Ramsay's soldiers and hounds have caught up with them. Then in an example of excellent timing Brienne and Podrick appear and Brienne minces Ramsay's men. With a wee bit of Podrick help. Seems her skills are rubbing off on him. Even Theon joins in.

She once again pledges herself to Sansa. This time she accepts. Brienne and Pod have a new boss. Sansa is safe for now. Phew. Things are finally looking up for her.

Jaime's boat arrives back at King's Landing from Dorne. Cersei is there to greet the boat and reunite with her daughter Myrcella. Sadly, Ellaria Sand's poison worked like a treat and Cersei gets to see her daughter's dead body by Jaime's side

Maggi the Frog's prophecy is coming true. As a child Cersei was told all her children would die before she did. 2/3s of them are gone now. Cersei's a broken woman. Between this and her atonement she's having a shite time of it.

Jaime is dying inside too. He wants revenge on the Dornish and on the people who hurt Cersei. It's him and Cersei against the world now. Him and his sister/lover (i know, i know) are going to stay as close as possible.

Across the city Margaery Tyrell is still under the High Sparrow's lock and key. She's not giving up anything. She asks the High Sparrow about her brother Loras but he's not giving up anything either.

In Dorne, Prince Doran is horrified to hear about the death of Myrcella. He genuinely liked her and his son really loved her. He realises Ellaria Sand was the murderer and then, just like that she stabs him in the heart. She still wants revenge against the Lannisters and now he's not in her way anymore.

In King's Landing Trystane Martell, Doran's son is mourning Myrcella. The godawful Snake Sands turn up to wipe him out. He's weak like his father and soon enough his head is skewered like a shish kebab.

In Meereen Varys and Tyrion talk about how to fix the city. It can't be done from the palace they live in. They have to get their hands dirty. But without Daenerys who'll take them seriously.

Not that there's anyone to rule anyway. Her absence and the fear struck into the populace by the Sons of the Harpy's has the city left deserted. It's eeriely quiet and graffiti around the place shows people are pissed off the Daenerys deserted them.

One solution to the problem is looking for the leaders of the Sons of the Harpy. Varys' spies are already on that. If they can break the sons the population of Meereen may be able to come out of hiding and start living again.

One other problem rears its head. This is a big one. Someone has set fire to all the ships in Meereen's bay. Daenerys fleet included. Every ship she owns is decimated. Her and her troops won't be sailing on Westeros anytime so. Great, another reason to keep her out of the battle. Yawn.

Jorah and Daario are north of the city looking for her. Jorah's greyscale infection is getting worse by the day. They find a piece of her jewellery surrounded by a thousand hoof prints. That many horses can only mean one thing. A Dothraki horde. A gigantic one. An easy to follow one.

The horde is on the move. Daenerys is tied up and walking. She's bedraggled and whipped. The Khal's riding beside her insult her and threaten her sexually, not realising she can understand everything they say.

They arrive at camp. Daenerys is presented to Khal Moro. He's only interested in mauling her until she speaks in Dothraki and explains she was once married to Khal Drogo. This earns their respect.

Until she asks to go back to Meereen. This aint allowed. The only place she's allowed to go now, as a Khal widow, is the sacred city of Vaes Dothrak. The city where Khal widows go to live out the rest of their lives in peace. This is going to put a crimp in her plans.

In Braavos Arya has been reduced to begging on the streets after she was blinded as a punishment. It's a depressing sight to see her with her hand out on the street, looking totally helpless.

The waif, the other assassin in training at the House Of Black and White is loving Arya's suffering. She forces her into a fight using duelling sticks, knowing Arya can't see the blows coming. The fuckin wagon.

Arya tries to defend herself but she hasn't a hope and takes a nasty beating. Is the waif doing this to be a sadist or is she actually training Arya? It's very ambiguous. Gloating over Arya she promises to be back again soon.

At the wall, Ser Allister's men have their bows trained on the room Ser Davos is in. Allister promises to let them go if they surrender. Davos doesn't trust him one bit. If they don't surrender by night fall they're all dead. Davos wonders about asking Melisandre for help. He's seen what she's capable of.

Melisandre's in another part of the castle preparing for sleep. She's troubled. Her visions haven't been coming true. First Stannis's victory and now Jon's death. She undresses *gratuitous nudity klaxon* and removes her necklace. We see her true form. She looks about 200 years old. She's definitely magical. There's no denying it now.

A slow enough season opener but an intriguing one. The final reveal more or less tells us what's coming with the Jon story. Things are looking up for Sansa thank feck, but things are looking desperate for the other Stark sister. As always the only down side is the Dornish stuff. It's embarrassingly bad.
