Game of Thrones S07 E01 - Dragonstone

In Castle Frey Walder is feasting and watching over his men. How can this be? He's dead. Ahh but it's not him, it's Arya and she's just poisoned everyone in the room. The only survivor is Walder's young wife Kitty who's left alive to tell everyone that the North remembers it's dead and never forgets to get revenge.

The White Walkers and the army of the dead are on the move. They are finally heading south. Led by the Night King it's a fearsome sight. God help whoever gets in their way. There is literally hundreds of thousands of them and they even have zombie giants.

All this is being witnessed by a warging Bran. Him and Meera have arrived at Castle Black and are met by a very suspicious Edd. Bran's Three Eyed Raven knowledge of everything persuades him to let him through.

At Winterfell Jon has the Northern lords gathered in a bid to find out if anyone has any knowledge of Dragonglass. Besides Valryian steel its the only thing he knows of that can kill a white walker.

Jon also declares that everyone, man or woman, between the ages of 10 and 60 must begin training for the war to come. Unsurprisingly, plenty of the lords in the room have a moan about his plans. They don't want their wives and kids in danger. But they already are folks FFS.

Lady Lyanna Mormont soon shuts them up. Jon's next course of action is to properly man the wall and so he chooses Tormund to command Eastwatch by the sea, the closest castle to Hardhome where the army of the dead was last seen. The Night's watch is now made up of wildlings. The irony of it.

Sansa undermines a decision of Jon's to forgive the Umber's and the Karstark's. Their sibling rivalry and infighting makes the Starks look immature and indecisive before the gathered lords.

Jon puts his foot down. He's the King of the North. Sansa looks crushed that her opinion on this means nothing to him. Littlefinger (ugh) watching from across the room senses a sibling split and sees a weakness he can exploit. The Karstark's and the Umber's are welcomed back into the Stark fold.

Away from the crowd the sibling bickering continues with Sansa comparing Jon to Joffrey. OH a low fuckin blow there sis. But as with most sibling's a joke cracks the tension and the argument is forgotten. Phew. They just reunited. A split now this soon would be cruel as hell.

They walk the walls of Winterfell reminiscing about their father and brother. They can't make the same stupid mistakes they did. A raven arrives from King's Landing from Cersei. She's demanding that Jon come to her and bend his knee to her. But she's a mere fart of a problem compared to whats north. Sansa thinks otherwise, knowing what she's like.

In the South Cersei informs Jaime that Daenerys has chosen Tyrion to be her right hand man. Their own brother is coming for them and he's on the way across the sea already. It seems they have nothing but enemies these days.

Jaime knows they will head for Dragonstone. Stannis Baratheon's old base that's been deserted since his defeat. Cersei's too busy ranting about their enemies north, south, east and west to listen. Jaime wants her to run away with him. They are all they have left.

All their allies are dead. News of Walder Frey's death has travelled to King's Landing. Cersei's not worried though. She has a plan and he's busy sailing towards her.

Why it's only the scummy psychopath Euron Greyjoy. The Iron island fleet has been rebuilt and they're in Blackwater Bay. Jaime isn't one bit happy because he knows they are backstabbing bastards.

In the throne room Euron argues that he and Cersei are a good fit. They've both been backstabbing by family members, him by Yara and Theon, her by Tyrion. He offers her an allegiance. His hand in marriage. She of course declines as he can't be trusted. He promises he'll return soon with a gift that will make her trust him.

In the citadel Sam is in training to become a maester. It's literally shitty work, he's a personal servant to the older maesters, cleaning their bed pans. It's a montage of faeces. Very very hard to watch. The poor fella deserves better than this. All the while the locked doors of the citadel and the knowledge beyond them keeps him going.

Archmaester Ebrose is the man in charge. He knows Sam is mad to learn but he has to pay his dues first with menial labour. Sam's request for access to the restricted books is denied but when he speaks of having seen the army of the dead Ebrose's interested is piqued. But Ebrose trusts in the wall. The wall has stood through a lot.

He tells Sam how important the citadel is, how it stores the knowledge of Westeros, how people would be uncivilised animals without its teaching. And how Sam should trust in how things are done there. He of course doesn't listen and steals a key into the restricted area.

In Winterfell Brienne is still teaching Pod how to fight and Tormund is still eyeing her up. He's mad for her. Sansa is watching it all when Littlefinger comes slithering up to her trying to worm his way back in. Brienne sees this and her presence causes him to leave. She knows he's up to no good.

Arya is on her way to King's Landing when she comes across a group of Lannister soldier's. They're just a group of young lads. She realises that most people working for the Lannister's aren't evil, most are just earning a wage. She jokes about heading south to kill Queen Cersei and they all laugh at this young girl and her warped sense of humour. If only they knew.

The Brotherhood without Banners are heading north. The Hound, Sandor Clegane, is with them. Him and Thoros of Myr are taking hops off each other constantly. They decide to take shelter at a farmhouse the Hound recognises.

It's a place he robbed years before when he was travelling with Arya. Inside the find the frozen bodies of a farmer and his daughter. Frozen and starved due to his theft. The Hound is wracked with guilt but tries to hide it.

Him and Beric Dondarrion talk about the Lord Of Light and his repeated resurrections. Beric admits he doesn't know what his purpose is yet. Thoros Of Myr then shows The Hound a vision in the flames. A vision of the army of the dead. The Hound then decides to fully commit to the Brotherhood.

He's troubled by what he's seen and he's guilt ridden over the dead bodies inside. He does something the Hound of old would never do. He buries the bodies and Thoros helps him to ease his conscience.

With the books Sam stole from the restricted library Sam is in heavy duty research mode. Gilly is helping and they discover a map of Dragonstone and realise it's built on a mountain made of dragonglass. Sam dispatches a raven to Jon with his new found knowledge.

Back in the citadel during his normal work he bumps into someone new in the hospital area. It's Jorah Mormont. He's in a bad way with greyscale and he's asking if Daenerys Targaryen has arrived in Westeros yet.

She's almost there. Her fleet has arrived at Dragonglass. A place soon to become very important. From there she's within spitting distance of the mainland.

Herself, Tyrion, Varys, Missandei and the Unsullied land ashore. She senses she's back home and in a way she is as Dragonstone was once, a long time ago, a Targaryen stronghold.

Her emotions are running high. She can taste the fight. It only heightens as they climb the steps of the castle. Now she has a war room. One once owned by Stannis Baratheon. Her and Tyrion take their places at the table. She only has one thing to say.

"Shall we begin?"

A low key but very solid seasoner opener. Daenerys is almost in Westeros. Shit is about to kick off big style. In curious as to what Euron Greyjoy's plans are too. When we first met him he seemed like too little too late but he looks like he could actually be a genuine player in the wars to come. Interesting
