Game Of Thrones S07 E02 - Stormborn

In a stormy Dragonstone Daenerys is growing impatient with the speed of her progress. She wants battle but war plans have to be drawn up first. Tyrion and Varys want to ensure she has plenty of backing and support in Westeros before she starts her invasion.

They have the Tyrell's and the Greyjoy's on their side and the Dornish now too. The Dornish came along with Varys and Daenerys is feeling slightly suspicious of his motives. She knows Varys was one of the hands behind her marriage to Khal Drogo. Varys pleads that everything worked out in the end for the best.

Anyway he's true loyalty isn't with any king or queen, it's with the people. He always does what's best for the people of Westeros. It's the genuine truth and she realises that. However she does make him pledge himself to her. And it's death for him if he ever crosses her. Daenerys does not mess around.

Then she gets a surprise visitor. Why it's the Red Witch Melisandre. Jesus she travels fast doesn't she. Varys recognises her as having once served Stannis Baratheon and wastes no time in telling Daenerys so

Melisandre has important things to tell Daenerys. She speaks of a prophecy about a prince or princess who was promised will bring the dawn and makes cryptic remarks about winter. Oh Yes, Daenerys doesn't know about the army of the dead and white walkers. She has a lot to learn.

She tells Daenerys to meet the King of the North, Jon Snow. Tyrion and Jon are old friends and Tyrion vouches for Jon as an honourable man. She tells Daenerys that Jon has made peace with the Wildlings and united the North. Tyrion tells her Jon hates Cersei and would be a valuable ally. Tyrion is asked to contact Jon to come and bend the knee.

A raven delivers the message to Winterfell. Sansa asks can the message be trusted but Jon knows it's really Tyrion. Sansa was once married to Tyrion and admits he's very different to his kin. Tyrion also mentions dragons. Davos realises dragon fire can be used against the dead.

In King's Landing Cersei tries to drum up support for the Lannister's to help them fight against Daenerys. One of the few families she can get is the Tarley's. Sam's family. His father Randyll and his brother Dickon (ha!!) join her cause.

Randyll is concerned about Daenerys' three dragons though. Her ancestors conquered the seven kingdoms with dragons before. Cersei's right hand maester informs him that a solution to that problem is being worked on right now. If anyone can bring them down it's him.

Randyll's son Sam is helping Archmaester Ebrose in the citadel. Both are trying to treat Ser Jorah but according to Ebrose the greyscale infection has spread too far. It looks bad. His chest and arms are in bits. Sam being Sam mentioned that Shireen Baratheon was once cured of greyscale but Ebrose shuts him down straight away. But Sam is Sam.....

Qyburn introduces Cersei to the solution to his forthcoming Dragon problem. A huge mounted harpoon gun called a Scorpyon. He tests the gun out on the massive Dragon skull behind the throne room. The harpoon easily pierces it's skull. She's pleased, very pleased.

In Dragonstone Yara Greyjoy, Olenna Tyrell and a newly arrived Ellaria Sand plead with Daenerys to attack King's Landing now. They have the ships, she has the dragons and the soldiers. She doesn't want to be queen of a destroyed kingdom and decides to wait

Tyrion's plan is to have Yara Greyjoy bring Ellaria Sand back to Dorne and return with the Dornish army who will then lay siege to King's Landing alongside the Martell army in a bid to starve Cersei and the Lannister's out. Meanwhile the Unsullied will take the Lannister ancestral home, Casterly Rock. This last part pleases Olenna Tyrell hugely.

Olenna Tyrell gives Daenerys some advice. Listen to the men around her but in the end use her own judgement. She's a dragon, so be a dragon. Wise words from one of the best character's in Westeros.

That night before the Unsullied leave for Casterly Rock, Greyworn admits his feelings for Missandei to her. They consummate their long courtship finally in a moment that's actually romantic for once and not gratuitous. A rarity.

In the citadel Sam is still annoying Ebrose about a cure for greyscale. During his research he's found a cure but it's forbidden as it's far too dangerous. The last person who performed the cure died of greyscale himself. But ya know, Sam is Sam and sneaks into Jorah's room that night anyway.

What follows is disgusting. A montage of pus and skin peeling. Sam is willing to risk it because he trained under Jeor Mormont at the Wall, Jorah's father, and he had a lot of respect for the man. Will it work? Who knows.

In the riverlands Arya is still heading south when she bumps into her old friend and travelling companion Hotpie. It's nice that someone she knows is still alive. He realises that she's very different to the girl he knew. He asks her did Brienne of Tarth ever catch up with her. She knowingly tells him yes. A catch up that ended with Brienne nearly ending the Hound.

When he tells her Jon Snow has retaken Winterfell she decides to take a break from her revenge quest and go home for a while. That was quite a touching scene actually.

In Winterfell another raven has arrived for Jon. This time from Sam. This one is about the mountain of dragon glass at Dragonstone. Wow. A big coincidence. Daenerys is also there. He can go see her and also get some sweet sweet dragon glass. Two birds with one stone and all that jazz.

The lords of the North are pleased by the dragon glass news. The letter summoning Jon to visit Daenerys doesn't go down as well. The lords do not trust the daughter of the mad king.

Sansa doesn't either and once again undermines Jon in front of the lords. They all need the King of the North in the north. But he won't shame himself be sending an emmisary to Daenerys. Plus he's the only one there who's seen the army of the dead. They need that dragon glass.

He chooses Sansa to control the north in his absence. This pleases Littlefinger (ugh) who spies a chance to gain himself more power with Jon gone. Thankfully Brienne notices his smile and will be in Winterfell to protect her.

Before he leaves Littlefinger tries to ingratiate himself with Jon but Jon sees through his ruse straight away. Before he leaves he pins Littlefinger to the wall and warns him off Sansa. A great moment.

On her way to Winterfell Arya makes camp and is attacked by a pack of dogs led by a huge beast. It's a direwolf. It's her Direwolf Nymeria!! The direwolf that attacked Joffrey and started off a big kerfuffle between the Lannister's and the Stark's. She recognises her owner and lets her pass. I'm betting we'll see her again.

The Greyjoy ships are on the way back to Dorne with Ellaria Sand and the godawful sand snakes. They are plotting revenge on Cersei and the Mountain. Ha!! as if, he'd kill them with a sneeze. Ellaria Sand meanwhile is flirting up a storm with a very willing Yara Greyjoy as a miserable looking Theon sits in the corner.

Then their ship is rammed. Yara watches as the sky lights up above them with fiery arrows and then Euron Greyjoy, her uncle, his ships sail into sight. There's bucketloads of them. Euron leads the charge and starts mincing people with his axe. Things get amazingly violent very fast. Happily Theon gets stuck in too, he can still fight.

Yara sends one of the Sand Snake's below deck to protect her mother Ellaria and above deck she watches as her fleet is ripped apart. Euron gets into battle with the other two Sand Snakes and quickly rips one of them apart. Moments later he chokes the life out of the second. I can't say ill miss them but their end was rather rough.

Below deck Ellaria and her remaining daughter are captured alive. Euron takes on his niece Yara. It's a brutal scrap but his strength overpowers her. He holds her before Theon taunting him, trying to get him to fight.

But Theon is triggered by all the carnage, remembers his torture and jumps overboard. Floating in the water he realises he's made the biggest mistake of his life.

Good stuff, good stuff. Seeing all the characters meeting up and getting closer is cool as hell. Daenerys plus Olenna Tyrell? Fuck yeah. Sam and Jorah? Class. That final battle? Bloody magnificent. Two more horrible supporting characters gone but Theon, Jesus, the poor hooer. I hope he gets to redeem himself someday.
